This project was a complete rebuild of a wastewater treatment facility located at the FPL Turkey Point Nuclear Plant in Homestead, Florida. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) during the five-year permit renewal process pointed out several items to be addressed at the plant. The years of corrosion and rust was the largest issue. Due to the nature of the environment within a sewer plant, the sewer gases erode the metal that sits above the water lines. The last major improvement to the plant was in 1999 during the expansion from a 17,000 gallon per day plant to the current 35,000 gallon per day plant.
In 1975, the original 17,000-gallon a day plant was put into operations. The current system was emptied, cleaned and all fabrications completed in a 91-day rehabilitation project from mid-December 2021 to mid-March 2022.
Approximately 35% of the metal was replaced with new steel plating. Once the construction phase was completed, the plant was sandblasted and painted with special coatings to protect the metal moving forward.
